R Honey Pots Apiary Return to: Bee Page/ Home Page

This is a photo of our apiary in Sebastopol in early spring. This is where we take our rescued bees to pursue happy bee careers. We use no chemicals, instead using powdered sugar and bottom boards for mite control. We try to create naturally strong, healthy hives to support a sustainable local bee gene pool. To ensure maximum ventilation, we use unpainted boxes so the moisture from the nectar can evaporate through the walls instead of remaining trapped inside to cause mildew. We feed bees sugar water only when they have been moved or recently captured, just to get them started. We harvest a minimal amount of honey as the bees have stored it for winter food rather than for our consumption, but the honey we do take remains raw and complete.
